Dr. Susan Lee Hughes is one of the main research contributors to the super soldier program for the army. She is responsible for synthesizing the crystal energy into ingestible chocolate candies in Growth Lab 1 (GLU001) which caused the initial growth outbreak and spread of the growth virus. Dr. Hughes works under Hannah Stromberg and by extension Bill Riggs. In Growth Lab 4 (GLU004)

Dr. Susan Lee Hughes is driven and motivated by pushing the boundaries of science. She expects a lot from her assistants but is generally always respectful. Unlike Luna Masters, Dr. Hughes generally does not appear to enjoy the growth effects from being exposed to the energy and to date has never had sex while under the influence of energy. Dr. Hughes is loyal to her superior officers and although she will raise concerns on the risks involved has never rebelled against government authorities.

Dr. Hughes is African American with a slightly darker complexion than Luna Masters. She has long dark brown frizzy hair which she generally ties up in a bun. Normally her outfit consists of a loose fitting long-sleeve dress shirt and a long grey skirt with a white lab coat worn on top.

Dr. Hughes was one of the first two subjects to be infected by the growth virus along with Rebecca Smith. Due to this fact Dr. Hughes seems to be particularly susceptible to Naomi Furihara's growth energy since Naomi was also one of the earliest to be infected.

Dr. Hughes' body undergoes normal energy absorption when exposed to growth energy. To date she has not exhibited any out of ordinary growth traits but this may be due to the fact that she has only been exposed to the initial growth virus and not the more exotic/unrefined energy crystals.
